Default Water pump & thermostat while replacing timing belt?

I am about to replace the timing belt on my 2001 Audi A6 2.7T(92000miles) through a mechanic. He recommends that I replace water pump and thermostat with the timing belt. I know that the timing belt is very crucial and its something that should not be postponed but how about the water pump and thermostat? I also hear that those two items can wait until 130~140k miles. If so, I will not replace it since I am looking forward in selling my car at that time. Please comment on what I think. Thank you!

The common thought is to replace thermostat, water pump, tensioner, idlers, and any leaking seals.

Do it. $150 peace of mind. When the $20 thermostat fails after the timing belt job because you wanted to save some dough, you will be paying another $800 for labor alone.

Cam seals,
Thermostat,
Water pump,
Crankshaft seal
All idlers

If you are keeping the car for longer than six months, DO IT. This stuff now costs pennies compared to what you might have to spend later if any of these go south.

Default TB Job

Hi, I agree with the others. Changing those parts is cheap insurance that could save you a bundle in labor if the water pump goes out 10k miles after the TB Job.

You should also consider the added value for resale if you decide to sell your car and can provide a potential buyer with receipts showing the work has been done.

@dhn0906,

BTW, the reason timing belts fail is one of the components seizes, throwing the belt off time and destroying your valves.

Exactly!! Not to mention the water pump's impeller is plastic. Plastic over a period of years and tens of thousands of miles of constant heating/cooling cycles becomes brittle. Once a blade breaks off or chips, it is no longer in balance and the unit essentially grenades itself. That of course results in a thrown timing belt and big a$$ paperweight for a motor. It's stupid NOT to change pump, thermostat and idler pullies and if I were a shop, wouldn't even do the job any other way.

PS - replacement pumps have metal impeller - selling point to new owner
