Default waterpump question.

I bought my TB kit from blauparts a few weeks ago and when I looked at the waterpump i noticed the gasket is cardboard. I thought forsure this wasnt the actual gasket and I thought I didnt get it., but earlier today I read a writeup for installing a waterpump on a 2.8L A4 and it said to install the cardboard gasket with gasket sealer. so my question is, IS THE CARDBOARD GASKET THE ACTAUL GASKET TO INSTALL ON THE WATERPUMP? LOL

Yes sir... I always put a thin layer of RTV on the pump, place the gasket on the pump, then spread thin layer on the engine block before installing..The RTV will hold the gasket in place while you fumble with the pump and seal forever... Remember, its a thin coat.

I now have a slight leak coming from my front-end. I just did the timing belt over the summer and the water pump... I think I screwed up the seal.. So you need a little sealant on the pump, THEN, put the gasket on, then put a little around the outside of the gasket which would seal to the engine?

i second putting a little rtv on, and make sure the surface is clean. I suggest spraying some brake parts cleaning into a rag and wiping down the surface to get off all residue.

Basically.. Your looking to 'sandwich' the paper gasket between two thin layers of RTV...I usually put a thin bead all the way around then brush it with an acid brush (the ones you get to put flux on before soldering pipes).. thin is the word, you really dont want a piece to break off and float around...put the second layer on the other part... this also helps to hold the gasket in place so it lines up while starting the bolts... carefully clean both surfaces as said by jonus.

hmm did the TB. Car is fine. I have a loud hissing noise past 3000RPM but that can be asked on another post.

I have a coolant leak now. Its not near the water pump. Actually other side of the car. The left. Idk what it could be. suggestions?
