Default Way too much gas used. HELP!

Hi,

I have a 1999 A6 TIP, 258 000 km on the clock. She uses 17l per 100km or 5km per liter (Sorry, no idea what that is in imperial). She should use 12l per 100km. Computer shows no fault codes. Any suggestions? Please HELP!!!

Google please:
http://www.google.com/search?q=17l+per+100km+to+mpg = 13.8mpg
http://www.google.com/search?q=12l+per+100km+to+mpg = 19.6mpg

That is really low, i know that i get around 14 when i'm driving around town, but it's because I live in a really hilly town and the cold weather means the engine needs more energy (fuel) to get warm and perform - but it shouldn't be this big of a difference.

What are your driving conditions? Because i have to think that that would be the only cause to a dramatic change in mileage. Maybe see what it is on a long trip sometime?

That works out to be about 13.9 miles per gallon. Yeah it is pretty bad. nemohm has a point that winter weather brings worse mileage, but 13.9 is something to be concerned about. I would do a routine tune up, such as oil, filter, sparkplugs, fuel filter, and air filter and see if it brings up the mileage.

Default Thanks - additional info

Thanks guys. I'm in SA so it's +-30 degrees C here, pretty darn hot. Last tank was 14.4 l/100km, an improvement. She's not due for a service, but I'll do that. She used to live at the coast, any chance maybe the PC just needs to be told we are inland now? 1600km above sea. ?? N
