RE: Weak Brakes

What year A6? What engine? Any fault codes in the brake electronics? Is the brake fluid low? How many miles are on the car?

Its a 2002 a6 fwd 3.0 with 68,000 miles. I dont have any faults codes. How do I really check to see if my brake fluid is low? Just a couple months ago my steering fluid was out and no warning, or notice came up so I'm guessing I may be low on fluid. Would fluid be resonsible for moments of strong brakes but then all of a sudden that strength gives out, than comes back, gives etc.

If your brake fluid was extremely low, it would behave as you are describing. If the fluid is low, you are getting air in the system and since the brakes are hydraulic they need fluid to work. If the fluid is full, buthas never been changed, you may have contamination that could cause the same problem. My first instinct in that situation would be to completely flush and bleed the brakes with good fluid. That is the simple solution to your problem. You may also have small leaks in the brake lines, my A4 was notorious for this where the lines entered the caliper.

The other issue may be a malfunctioning ABS module, but that should throw a code if it is going out.
