Its not a typical turbo whistle, its lower pitch & louder. More whine like. Barely notice it if you just rev when not in gear, but under load you hear it. Seems to be boost-specific. Because once it reaches its full volume it stays the same even as revs increase. Doesnt change based on what gear either. And I am not getting any codes.

Any ideas? I am thinking maybe a boost leak. My DVs are brand new 710n's, so it shouldnt be them. And the car seems to still be making power as normal. Details & the few mods I have are in my sig.

Please help me out on where to start diagnosing this. Thanks.

 

Boost leaks won't make a whistle or whine noise, you'll get a whoosh sound of air escaping thats about it. When the stock k03's start to go they will whistle then eventually sound kind of like a police siren.
You can thank APR for speeding up the process there IMO.

 

It kinda does sound siren like... I have only been chipped for a few months and they still feel strong and I dont get any smoke out the exhaust. Thats what happened when the turbos in my Z started to go... How can I daignose further?

 

Well you can't really access the turbos without taking out the motor, so just watch the boost level with your boost gauge (which you should have) and make sure its still boosting around 15 psi. Once it starts getting louder and the boost starts dropping off then its time to replace them. You can get a set of K04's from www.ecstuning.com for around 2.5k which are alot more reliable. K03's are ticking time bomb's after the 80k mark.

 

I had a similar sound coming from my old Volvo with a T5 and it was a leak from the turbo inlet hose. That time was louder tho, I think due to a pinching of the opeing combined with the leak itself.

 

Anyone else have ideas? Was just trying to diagnose with someone else revving the engine but its hard to tell over the DVs, engineand intake noise where its coming from. Plus its not as loud when not under load, this was done stationary. Kinda sounds like a roots type supercharger...
