Default What is this component - near 99 2.8 throttle body

I have a 99 A6 C5 2,8 30V AHA/

I've had a rough low 250 rpm idle issue discussed in this forum.

We attempted to do a vagcom throttle body adaptation this AM but it did not work - still no idle - . Also replaced batter with a known good one - still had tb faults. So, I took out the TB to make sure it was clean - ouch - that was a fun job. On the way, I broke something, and maybe found my problem ( I hope).
There are som pics below, but what is the cylindrical component that I broke two connections off of. And what is the gunk - oil/water ? And how does it get there? Could this be my problem?

Thanks...
...Mike

That's your crankcase breather hose. It is known to plug in and cause back pressure blowing out your engine oil seals.

Here is new one, I'm not suggesting you buy from partsgeek.com it's just the 1st I clicked on to get a picture. http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/199...ther_hose.html

Could that be causing my rough idle and throttle body errors ?
(but the TB is clean)
