Question What oil do you guys recommend?

Hi everyone,

I know this might be stupid but, I want to figure out what oil to use for my 05 a6 4.2 besides what the dealer puts in, and if anyone recommends a different filter rather then the one offered at the dealer.

As always, thank you for your reply's!

I've been running Royal Purple in my 03 4.2. No complaints.

I use Castrol Syntec, the one made in Germany, sold by Autozone

What kind of climate do you live in? You'll want to have less viscous oil in colder weather.

I live in a desert. Coldest it gets here is 50oF. Which type should I use?

* If the temperature never drops below 5°F, but you get often enough temperatures over 100°F, you should go with a more viscous oil:
15W-40; 15W-50; 20W-40; 20W-50.

* If the temperature is very seldom in the 95°-100°F range, then you can go with any of the following:
5W-30; 5W-40; 10W-30; 10W-40.

Nevertheless, whatever oil you decide to use should carry the "API Service SF or SG" specification.

Well i never heard of royal purple, is that better than Castrol Synth?

I live in Michigan so its cold here and summers are short so we get 3 months of 90's

What does everyone think of Mobile one oils, better than Castrol?

In the past I have alternated between SAE30 in the summer and 5W-30 in the winter, but now-a-days I pretty much just keep synthetic 5W-30 in year-round. The guys that do my performance mods feel it better protects the turbos.

For what it's worth I'm in Ohio where the temps range from 10-100 over the year.

It was a Jan-2008 TSB somewhere around regarding oils that meet the VW 502 00 and 505 01 Quality Standards.
Probably someone might know where that is and saved it under "Favs". I reinstalled Windows meantime and erased by accident the wrong hard drive in the process (distractions, distractions, distractions...)

Under products available in NA, VW 502 00 -compatible they list:
- Castrol = ZVW 352 167 (5W-30)
- Castrol = ZVW 352 540 (5W-40)
- Castrol = SLX Professional OE (5W-30)
- Castrol = Syntec (5W-40)
- Pennzoil = Platinum European Formula Ultra (5W-30)
- Quaker State = Q European Engine Ultra (5W-30)
- Kendall = GT-1 Full Synthetic (5W-40)
- Mobil = Mobil1 (0W-40)
- Motul = 8100 X-cess (5W-40)
- Pentosin = Pento High Performance (5W-40)
- Seventy-Six Lubricants = 76 Pure Synthetic (5W-40)
- Elf = Excellium NF (5W-40)
- Motul = Specific 505 01 502; 00 505 01 (5W-40)
- Total = Quartz Ineo MC3 (5W-30)

Under products available in NA, VW 505 01 -compatible they list:
- Castrol = G 052 167 A2 (5W-40)
- Castrol = SLX Professional VW 50501 (5W-40)
- Castrol = SLX 505 01 (0W-40)
- Motul = Specific 505 01 502; 00 505 01 (5W-40)

Nevermind, I found it. So much for typing...

* Some people may swear by RoyalPurple. There's nothing wrong with that.
As you can find out on your own by reading the .pdf file, that oil is not listed as "meeting the VW/Audi quality standards". Do they keep a grudge against Mr. Williams' company by not testing its "fully synthetic, blended with Synerlec additives" and leaving it out of the list? I doubt it.

* Some other people may swear by how good Amsoil is. Most of them may swear that is the "best" and the ...only one fully synthetic. There's nothing wrong with that.
As you can see for yourself, VW/Audi does not endorse Amsoil as meeting their quality standards, since it isn't on the list. Is there a great conspiracy against the fully synthetic oil sole producing company, by not testing its product and leaving it out of the list? I doubt it.

As a general rule of thumb, use at your discretion whatever oil fits the "quality" compatibility chart, and you're comfortable with. The same goes for the oil filter.
