Default What would cause this?

2002 A6 3.0 w/ 76,000 miles on it.

I was driving in town today and the car started 'shimmering' real bad so I accelerated to see if it went away and then a light came on.

The light is a circle with a MPH in the middle and a 1 on the upper left side of the circle.

Then the CEL came on and just blinks.

Blinking or blinks ?

Steady MIL is ok to drive, blinking MIL is bad- do not drive the car!!!

What happened when you accelerated?

The lights description is in your users manual -

get the DTC and post- could be just a misfire...

The CEL is blinking however that other light is steady. It sputters like crazy.

I am going to get it back to the shop but they have left for today. I had just picked it up after the replaced a snub mount and a fuel filter.

Well the MPH thing is for when you set the speed notifier (speed limit reminder, if you will). If you didn't know you can reach a speed, push a button (left one for a second or two?) and it will from then on beep whenever you reach that speed. So basically you can know when you reach like 60mph. I have NO clue why that came up when it did, sounds like you have some pretty funky things going on - get it checked out quick.

Yeah, it is not kosher to drive the car when you have a blinking CEL.

Also let me add this bit of info

Like I said above I had just got the car back from having the snub mount and FUEL FILTER replaced.

Well when I got in the car I noticed the car was low on gas, it was showing 65 miles till empty. So i went to the gas station and put about 10 gallons of gas in it. Well when I drove off it still showed I had 65 miles till empty. After I got down the road about a mile it said I had 70 miles till empty. So it seems that sensor isn't working properly.

BINGO!!!

It was one of the coils!! Running like a champ again.

I swear when this car is running well it is the best performing car I have ever had and I've had some nice cars.

BUT damn it's been a pain in the *** keeping it running.
