'99 A6 2.8 Quattro Tip - I average about 22 mpg mixed driving. On the highway, it's usually 25 or so. I did see a few 27s on vacation... 91 octane, all stock car. It may even get better after new tie rod ends, control arms, tires, and an alignment...

my question to you guys is do I need 91+ octane for my 2.8? Everyone told me I should go with premium fuel. What is everyone's take on this? I figured its not a high performance motor.

Ok i actually dont know, but i DO know that almost every single post on here does NOT pertain to the original poster's question. The engine in the 97 has 12 valves total in the 2.8, versus the 98-presents' 30 valves. What does this mean for us, the 97 owners? Their mileage will be significantly higher than our older models. The valves control a LOT in the 4 stroke system, and having 5 not only makes much more power per liter, but better mileage too. I found a source online that was saying 19/21 city and highway respectively. Cmon people if you dont have a 12v 2.8 dont bother posting. it doesnt help
