Smile wheels

I have a 2001 A6, 2.7T, Quattro with 16" OEM wheels. I want to put 17" wheels on this vehicle. I ordered some wheels fro e-bay that had the same specs as my existing 16" wheels only 17"( 17" x 7.5", 5-112, 45ET). I had to install hub centric rings and did so but when I went to install the wheels on the front of the vehicle, they hit the brake calipers before they would seat on the hub of the car.
I was told by a dealership in Denver that any 45 ET wheel would fit without the use of spacers. I don't want to use spacers. So much for that.
Have any of you had the same experience? If so, any ide3as and vendors I should try.? I don't want to spend $1000 per wheel!

Thanks for your help.
