A8 4.2 Quattro
Hi everyone
after a BMW 540(E39) and 3x740 (E38) I've decided to try an Audi A8. First impressions are very favourable, but very different in character to the BMWs I've had, however I need some help and advice.
Just bought a LWB A8 4.2 quattro with EVERYTHING, 1 owner March 2000 car with 32,500 miles and a full Audi main dealer history. Last service in Nov 03 and only 6,000 miles since, an elderly and very low mileage last owner.
At what mileage / age should the cam belt be changed and any ideas on cost to do this both main dealer or preferably independent specialist.
Also general idea on servicing costs, I know them backwards for the BMWs but not Audi's and would appreciate your input, particularly from those with the same car.
Many thanks in advance

I believe the "O-fish-ull" recommendation is something like 90K. But, I've seen recommendations in some of the forums (here and others) to best have this service performed around the 60K mark. My 8 is a l'il older, and a l'il higher mileage than yours, but still under 60K. I plan on having mine replaced/serviced as near to the 60K mark (maybe a little over, depending on availble time) as I can. Gotta get my POS back on the road, first...
Edmunds.com has a nice list of maintanence. Along with US price estimates. With a bonus or recalls list and TSB's. I saw that you were in London, so the prices are for the US

Well it used to be 120000km, then Audi dicided to change the intervals,
most likely due to pemature timing belt failures for a number of reasons.
The most notable one being that service technos did not follow the simple
instructions of checking & adjusting the belt at prescribed intervals noted
in the service booklet and audi bulletins. I have replaced many A8 belts
and found they where all too loose but still in good condition. I recommend
you get your belt checked and adjusted because the alternative is MAJOR engine
damage.
