I'm interested in buying an A8 from 1997-2000 in the UK, but a dealer told me I'd be lucky to see 20mpg from it. I spoke to a 3.7 owner who told me he got mid 20s to low 30s per gallon. I've also seen 4.2 Quattros listed on websites which claim it only loses 1 mpg to the 3.7. I'm very confused. Could owners of these models and the 2.8 please tell me what kind of mpg they get ?

I have the 4.2 sport, around town I get about 15 to 18 mpg average, on the motorway I get about 25 to 30 mpg on average, but I recently traveled from Manchester to Portsmouth at 60 mph with cruise control on and no traffic snarl ups and got 38mpg for the trip.
Tha average combined is about 23 to 25mpg.

In reply to the MPG question.

I drive a 3.7 2001 model. It does 29 mpg at 65mph on the motor way and 17 mpg on careful town driving. The car is very thirsty. Know what you are letting yourself in for before you buy one!

Thanks my friend - the first honest reply I've had to this question for some time. I've actually now bought a 2.4 A6 as a 'make do' car. This is quite thirsty in itself, so all those 4.2 Quattro A8 owners who are telling me they easily get high 20s and upto 35 mpg on average probably need to stop believing the trip computer, and actually seeing what real mileage they get from a tank of fuel.

anuvid,
Just done Manchester to Felpham (West Sussex) which is 276 miles, filled tank to brim before traveling, filled back to brim when arrived, tank only took 37 litres.
You do the maths, but by my calculations, that works out about 34 MPG.

BTW. My wifes 2.7T A6 cannot touch my 4.2 A8 on MPG.

Once again. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. I currently have an A6 2.4 as a runabout, and on a normal journey I get 30mpg. It's been as low as 22 mpg and theoretically can go as high as 35mpg. Your 4.2 Quattro sounds grand. That sounds a small tank though. Mine's 60 litres I believe. Anyhow, thanks for the info. I guess I just have to buy one and see. Problem is I'm not seeing top mileage from my A6, partly because my journey averages 30mph for the first 30 mins and then 80mph for the rest, so it's a 'combined' figure of around 30mpg I'm getting. Your journey was pure motorway I guess.

I don't believe the driver information system, but I do believe proper figures like yours - 37 litres in the tank, 276 miles covered.

Thanks again, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.
