Default 12V Accessory Replacement Socket

One thing about my TT that always makes me curse is the 12V accessory. The European socket is slightly larger so all of my plugs pull out. I've tried a plastic sleeve, but it works marginally at best. There are several DIY articles to replace the stock socket with a Radio Shack unit, but they discontinued the part.

I finally found a part that works for $5.95. http://gamainc.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?item=3012NA

It's easy to install too.

1. Remove the screw above the ash tray
2. Remove the connectors and pop out the existing socket
3. On the new socket, unscrew the outer shell. I cut off the black cover with some snips.
4. Rough up the shell with sand paper, insert into the hole, and JB weld into place. It fits snugly so the JB weld just keeps it from pulling out.
5. Solder a 12 gauge wire onto the ground lug and onto to the shell. You can connect to the existing connector how ever you want. I'm going to insert two male spade lugs into the existing connector. I like to keep connectors stock if I can help it.
