180 FWD Coilpacks
Hey Nate...
You have a 180 FWD don't you? As you already know, I don't. But recently some friends of mine over here in Korea have brought some of their TTs over and one in particular was over today and having an issue that is very much exclusive to the 180 FWD. He replaced his Intake today with an HKS Shroom filter from the original box filter. After swapping it out, he began having this odd thing happen. Unrelated to his intake... everytime he really got on the gas... he began getting a heavy flutter and a CEL. He originally thought it wasn't related (maybe DV needing adjusted after intake mod, MAF housing conflicting, etc)... but when we looked under the hood... his coil packs had begun riding up in the sleeves; all but the last one (held down by that little box).
We pushed them back down and took it for a run. In a ¼-½ mile stretch, he opened it up to 80mph and 16PSI boost... right around 80mph.. he got a flutter and a CEL. When we pulled over, coil pack was popped up again. You ever get this?
Obviously since the spark plug is screwed in, he shouldn't get any pressure build up in the coil pack sleeve... unless I guess the threads are jacked and leaking (doubtful though).
I guess it could be vibration. We decided that our buddy the machinist could probably build a little bracket (kinda like on the 225 where the EGR is) to help hold the coilpacks snug. I mean... the screw holes are still there on the block on the 180... just not being used (unless you use them as hoist points during engine removal)
Any clue about this issue Nate?
Also... Do you happen to know if the Forge FMIC can be used with the stock 180FWD Intake Manifold or if you have to swap out for the one with the driver's side Throttle Boddy?
My Buddy is looking to begin some serious modding on his 180FWD now... (he has $$ to fund it too) and curious about a good sequence of mods. I'm giving him advice... but unfortunately the FWD 180 is a lot different than my 225 QC. I still told him that PAGparts is the way to go on BT rather than APR... and that he can do most preliminary mods prior to the BT.
anyhow... give me a heads up on any 180 FWD quirks you can think of.

Personally I would never use Pagparts again all the delays with my build have been because of pagparts he delayed multiple times on my kit and after numerous calls and emails most of which went unanswered he finnaly gave me a "garunteed" ship date and then delayed another 3 weeks now he has the ECU to flash it and once again not answering his calls or emails to tell us why it hasnt been mailed back yet which has delayed the pickup of my car another week
I have a fwd TT. I have never encountered this issue before. He should check out a couple of threads on vwvortex in the 1.8t section. Kinetic motorsports has an exhaust manifold that will mate up with an O2 pipe. This allows you to use a 42dd dp and still go big turbo. This is the route I am considering. I just got a custom catback made for my car last week, there is a thread on here about it. Exhaust thread https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=110425

haha your buddy's been emailing me neur0tic.
Here's the answers I gave, for everyone else's reference:
You do have to swap the intake mani for the forge kit but you can make an FMIC setup using the stock intake mani as well.

The ignition coil issue you are experiencing is very common. There are two solutions I know of for it:
Buy AWD style coilpacks that are bolted down:

Or, buy a set of coil pack hold down brackets from this guy:

The Bremi packs usually pop up from the spark plugs not being torqued correctly but i havent heard anyone having issues with the sleve riding up. What Steve said sounds plausable, but not sure. I would just scrap the ones he has and get some Hitachi bolt down packs and im sure he wont have any more issues.
The Forge FMIC uses a 225 manifold so they dont have to loop back on the 180. They do however make a C style kit for other 1.8t with passenger side TB.
As for Pag, people need to realize Arnold is just one person and he gets tons of orders everyday. Exttreme ordered a new tial housing kit and is probably having the same issues as BlownCamaro (Cody) did and that is him making the dp since he doesnt have a bunch of them like he does for the fwd 1.8t's. Cody ended up having 1552 make his so he didnt have to wait any longer. What Arnold offers is far better than what any other place has, plus he can get you just about any turbo, with any housing, and in any trim. Try going to apr and ask them for a T3 flanged turbo..... They would LOL at you.

oh yea...
well I LOL @ APR!!
lol
Actually, APR is probably a good choice for folks with very little knowledge on the topic and a lot of money to spend. It's already engineered, mass produced, and has set instructions so they just throw down the cash, receive the box, take it to someone else, throw down more cash, and end up with a faster (albeit not as fast as it could be) car for a ridiculous price. A good choice for someone willing to pay double for convenience.

haha... yea, he told me he got that answer from someone, I just didn't know it came from here. Im trying to figure out the new VAG-COM software so I can clear a few codes for him. I just recently read my own codes while patching my boost leak and am back running a full 22psi again.
