Default 2001 TT Roadster- Rear Window / Deflector Problem

The rear window / deflector - the one that goes up and down, not the one on the convertible top - is not working properly.

It will go most of the way up then stops about 2-3 inches short of full up.

I removed the cover panel and things looked normal. The twin screws didn't appear to be damaged. While messing with it I was able to get it to go all the way up. But it appears to bind somewhat at the place where it was stopping.

I didn't see any reason for this to bind. I put the cover back on and now it stops prematurely like before.

My service manual completely ignores this window. There is no mention of it at all.

Can this be repaired or is it one of those things the whole window unit needs to be replaced?

Help Please!

BTW I noticed this after I had the convertible top replaced.

Most of the time it is the drive belt that turns the screws to make the deflector go up. It gets chewed up and usually the glass will not go all the way up.

Go to this web site and you can see the pictures of the whole process - TUTO TT ROADSTER Demontage/Remontage WINDSTOP en verre - TT Mk1 : Coupé / Roadster / Le Mans / quattro Sport - Forums Audi-Passion / La Communauté des Quatre Anneaux

Thank you very much for the link. The pictures are helpful but I only speak and read English.

It looks like the entire window assembly comes out in one piece and can be worked on at the bench.

Anyone have an English translation?

Default Stuck Amals

The reason for it stopping is the drive belt at the top of the screws has teeth missing from it and will not go all the way up. There is nothing wrong with the screws. Take the cover off and feel underneath at the top of the drive screws and you can feel the belt. It probably needs to be replaced. The belt runs from the top of one drive screw all the way across to the other drive screw. A new belt costs way over a hundred dollars.
