Default Arg. Speedo died after brake switch replaced - suggestions?

Hi there guys, hope you can help with.

I just replaced the brake switch at the pedal since my taillights had gone out. I followed the instructions from another thread on her and it appeared to work great at first. The new brake switch works great, tailights are back.

However, now the speedometer is stuck at 0. And the fuel gauge needle is 'gittery', moving up and down about a 1/16th of a tank repeatedly. I checked the fuses, and unplugged and re-plugged the three plugs from the lower dash (lights, dimmer, and what looks like an OBDII port) hoping it was just a loose wire or connection, but it hasn't make a difference.

Car drives fine, but after a few miles the check engine light came on (hopefully speedo related error).

I only dropped the lower dash, and didn't touch anything cluster related. The cluster was already replaced under warranty by the previous owner, so I'm hoping it's not that again...

Any suggestions? I'm going to try to dig through the archives more but I didn't see anything at first glance.

Thanks in advance.

Find out what that code is first, it'll save you a crapload of unnecessary work. Autozone or the like should be able to read it for you, or find someone with vag-com to scan it for you. (or buy a vag-com cable yourself, they're worth it.)
