How do you manage holding off until the low fuel light comes on?

How do you guys get such good MPG? I get like 18 mpg driving conservatively in the city on 93 octane... I hardly ever ride it past 3k RPMs so its not like i'm working the engine hard. I haven't done much highway driving so I don't know what kind of MPG i get up there but its 18-20 in the city.
