Default Can dealerships make me a spare key using my VIN?

Hey guys,

Lost my key tonight and guess what....it was my last one! How much will it cost to get one made using my VIN? Can they do it at the dealership or do they have to order it from Audi?

My car is sitting in a public parking lot, its gonna get toed if I dont figure something out soon. How long and how much $ is this gonna take?

Thanks guys.

I don't think it's as easy as you think. Yes you can get the key cut by the vin number, but I'm not sure how you are going to program it. As far as I know you need a key to program a new key.

I would have the car towed to your audi dealer, since they are going to need the car anyway. I would guess minimum lead time it would take is a 4 days. Normally it takes 2 full week to get a new key. I got my key said and done for $130 at the dealer. I would suspect it would be close to $300 in your case (expidited and programming somehow). I always heard if you loose your only key it can cost up to $700 to get it fixed, but I don't think that true.

Let us know how it works out.

Ok, well I had it towed to the dealership (about two miles away) for 75$. Dealership is saying $240 for flip key, $140 for regular key spare. How much does programming usually cost? Is there a way to program it yourself?

This whole deal sucks, I should have gotten a spare a long time ago but at the time (when all was well) it was hard to justify $240+ for a spare. At least Audi is letting me park my car on their lot until the keys come in. It will probably be sold when I go to pick it up!

Ill let you guys know the final cost of losing your last key when all this bullshit is over with.

I would guess the price includes the programming. Not really too bad of a deal, concidering the situation. I guess it depends on how long it takes as well.

i would recommend to buy one on ebay a blank flip copy for $40 bucks and drive to the dealer have them cut it and program it there for alot less money. i lost my only key one time for a cadillac .. had to get it towed to the dealer in order for them to make a new key total deal about $400 dollars. not cool so if you have only one key start thinking about getting a spare one. You never know whats gonna happen to your only key.

Audi dealerships won't cut eBay keys anymore. The metal is cheap/hard, it screws up the bit on their machines. Trust me, I've been through this before. I actually have a blank key and a remote in my glove box, it's useless. I couldn't even find a locksmith in the Midwest that would cut it.
