I had posted that I had a CEL with code p0171 a few days back but never got it figured out. Well the CEL ended up going out but I have noticed a deteriorating condition of the car not starting right from a dead cold. I noticed that the hum of the pump primming works intermittently and last night although 60 degrees out it cranked for several seconds before starting.

I am assuming puel pump considering im at 160k and its never been replaced? But would that have thrown that code then disappeared? I know usually when they go they just stop working which usually sucks but maybe I'm lucky and its dying a slow painful death.

How olds the filter? Fuel filter is supposed to be changed every 10k miles or so. These can lead to slow starts and lean fuel conditions.

my 01 jetta had 199678 on the pump, change fuel filter as stated above even though its prolly not listed a maintenance item, $10 same filter as my 01 turbo jetta

I would suggest the same. Replace the filter and then the pump. Before the Fuel pump dies, better replace once at all.

many possibilities
a vagcom scan could find the answer, i bought mine after shortly buying an 01 jetta 1.8T, it does soooo much, many things i do not know how to use, but there is many simpler uses, vag wiki even gives likely causes to troublecodes, i works on almost all vw+ audi vehicles, i have already diagnosed issues with my recently purchased TT, you can try to find someone near you for a scan, maybe autozone if they cover vag cars, my buddy's garage can't scan vw's without extra cost software for his $10,000 snap-on setup!!
