Default check engine light

ok i am pretty much stumped and i dont want to pay to have my car scanned but here it goes.....
I had my clutch changed by a professional (due to warentee work) then i was so happy i had my car back with a brand new clutch and fly wheel, i drove it to the point of the 3000 mile limit on my oil change..... so i take it to my local jiffy lube to get it changed(i got the first oild change free when i bought the car) and i drove it easy for about 500 miles and now my check engine light is on i had to take the undercarriage skit plate off because of damage and it was hanging down so i took it completely off so it wasnt hanging down then we had a very hot day and the check engine light comes on. so i drive it a little bit and wen i get up to speed on the high way i noticed my outside temp started dropping from 104 to 103 to 102 etc etc down to 89 and then i stopped to get a drink and i came out and turned the car on and the light wasnt on anymore so then yesterday it did the same thing i came out from work and turned the car on and the light was there so i started driving it and i went to a friends custom shop and shut it down then when i left i turned the car on and no light and this is confussing the crap out of me some one help

No one here is going to know why you have a CEL. You will at the very least have get it scanned or buy a cheapie $50 OBD II scanner. You could also ask around here if anyone is local and has vagcom or a scanner.

Stop at Autozone or something and they will scan it for free if the lights on with their OBDII.

Nah i bought a scanner i scanned it and i came up with a P1296 which is a engine coolant system malfunction so i am thinking loose wire on the temp sensor

Don't discount the sensor itself

P1296 means coolant temp sensor or failed thermostat, the sensor would normally be green but I believe some have updated them to the blue type.
if the thermostat has failed you wont get any hot air into the cabin and the danger of that is a blown cylinder head in the making so sort it asap.
if its the sensor you could do a resistance test and check if the wires are on tight and not corroded which would give a failed reading
