Hello!

Just joined 2 minutes ago, so I decided to post!

So ArtwerkesTT, that should make you smile!

Okay, here's my story, and I'm sticking to it, cuz it's true. I'm 51, and faced with a slight problem due to kids. I've been saving my '86 Firebird for them to drive, but as Spring approaches (meaning when they both are legal to drive) and I consider the fact that most cars on the road today are automatics and they both could not tell me what that third pedal was for, I hesitate to turn over the keys to hormonally stimulated semiadults who will operate a manual transmission for the first time.

Being the loving, caring parent I am, I have come up with a better plan, but I need your input to make this work.

What I think would be best, in the interest of driver training, experience, safety, etc....

I should give up my Bonneville to the kids. It's reliable, safe, big, air bags, auto trans etc...

That would leave me without a daily driver. Hmmm, I always wanted a TT. I could get one with Quattro so I could get to work here in Minnesota winters!

Okay, what do you guys think... If I propose this plan to my wife, what are the odds are it will fly? Remember, kids, safety, keeping the Bird for fun when the Tahoe gets boring for the wife. Maybe I'll throw in a gift certificate someplace.

Seriously, I'm looking forward to hearing your input re the TT. I know I'm already in trouble because when I asked my son to pull all his C&D mags with any reference to the TT, his response was simply a huge grin!

Damn, if my parents gave me any car when i needed it i would have a big grin too

TT is a very good car and the one that might come to the states soon has the sequential (sp?)gearbox (like the BMW's SMG, F1 gearboxes...) taken to the next level, check this out: https://www.audiforums.com/display_t...osition=1

Also if you want to teach your kids to drive stick get them a 4th or a 3rd generation 2.0 Jetta. That is the car to learn stick on. I was looking at them before my A4 came around at a good price and they shouldnt be more expensive than ~15K (4th gen 00-01), older ones go for cheaper obviously.

I just bought tires from a guy about your age with a TT and he loves it, good in the snow too he said.

I'd go with selling the bonneville and firebird and buying a Jetta. A 3rd gen GLX,the VR6 motors are bulletproof and the car is bigger than the new style. Its harder to find a stick GLX that hasn't been abused because they are sporty cars, so an auto would work too, and prob be a better car. Kids these days should learn how to drive sticks, haha (its funny because I'm 16 (I have a 5spd)).

Thanks to all responses.

Firestarter, hehehee...I DID NOT say to Dan he would get the TT! Do you have any further info on the sequential shifter? I know there are two types and would like to know which is planned for the TT? Sorry, I haven't checked the link yet so my question may be answered there.

Boosted, I may have been a bit nebulous about who gets the new car...so there is no confusion, it will be me! I came very close to buying a new GTi way back then, but the dealer wouldn't budge off MSRP. The Jetta would be good, but I'm looking for a fun, state of the art daily driver, rally class type car. I love the looks of the TT interior and exterior, and the all wheel drive option makes me salivate. The other one I'm considering is the Imprezza.

Ideally, I want a GT2, but my wife would shoot me! I already have three high horsepower, modified sports vehicles for fun. [pics below, I apologize in advance for bandwidth theft] {remember, I'm new here} I just am looking for something to take back and forth to work that would be exciting, and I could hand me down the other cars! The TT seemed to be the best for me.

I hate to say this, but where I live the majority of vehicles sold and on the road are pickup trucks. 50% are driven by hormonally stimulated teenagers concentrating on seeking out others of like minds for pursuit of the continuation of the human race. Nothing wrong with that, I was one once myself. However, I need a responsive vehicle to take evasive maneuvers whenever that pickmeup truck is drifting into my lane. Brakes, steering, handling, acceleration are important to my survival. Defensive driving rules!

In addition, a fair percentage of Chryslers in my area are on the road with no drivers. Scares the crap outa me. However, when you get closer, you can see the little old lady who is the source of all those great driving only on Sunday specials in the used car department at the local dealer, and only theyyou can realise she forgot the car seat.Anyway, for my safety, I still want the qualities in a sports car I mentioned above to keep myself safe.

I have to do all the work on my cars myself, because I don't trust the local dealers to work on anything that is not a pickmeup truck or an unmanned landyacht. So, what I need from you experts is feedback on the TT. Tell me the dirt, the real deal, the likes, dislikes, recalls, racing victories, design foibles (cuz I don't want to be forced to remove the oil filter when I change out the exhaust manifold.) Tuners, EFI considerations... I'll bet you know where I'm coming from now!

So, the Jetta is on hold for now...

I don't know about the Audi sequential shifter, but the BMW is not a true sequential. It's just the standard transmission controlled by servos and actuators (sp). It is not an "F-1" style sequential shifter. I think Mercedes is the same way.

Hello, Newbie here too. I don't currently own a TT, but will be vying for one within the next few months...provided I can be made to understand it is considered a reliable car.

Anyway, I feel compelled to talk about the sequential transmission you all have mentioned since I just saw it covered on Car & Driver TV. I think it's pretty fantastic. It's called DSG, which stands for Direct Shift Gearbox. Essentially, it's a dual clutch system. There are two main gear-shafts...one carries the odd numbered gears and the other carries the even numbered gears. When under way, the system is managed in such a way the when a gear change occurs, the current gear and the next gear (up or down) are shifted simultaneously. This makes for fully engaged shifts that happen in two-tenths of a second! Gears can be manipulated in three different ways too. You can select gears using shift paddles on the steering wheel, the stick on the console, or you can just put it in "drive" and let it do its thing. So, you can drive it as an automatic or a standard. It's a true sequential transmission too, not just an automatic with revised shift points. The TT is the first car ever released with this kind of transmission, which is at the pinnacle of innovation and technology.
