if the car works the same with and without the maf, your maf is fine.
unless the MAF is totally dead and doesn't register as plugged in. this would cause the traction light to stay lit and the car would run the same with the MAF plugged in as it would with the MAF unplugged... essentially the car thinks the MAF is not present the entire time.

thats my 2 cents.

ESP = electronic stability program, never did like those girly buttons

I had this happen brought it to audi turned out to be a sensor.

your MAF is FINE if car performs with or without the ESP light on. don't worry, my ESP and ABS come on and off occassionally and sometimes they like to stay there until i turn off my car.
