Few Questions. Help
I am 16 and thinking about buying a used 2002 Audi TT Coupe Quattro with 38,000 miles. I have heard that the repairs for this car are very expensive and that is breaks alot. I like the car very much and i know that Audi is a very great brand. Can you guys give me some advice on what i should do? And what should i look for when buying a used Audi. Also can you tell me about any problems you guys have had and how much the repairs were. Thank You
It's a higher end car, and you're going to pay more for repairs, because of that alone. They're also fairly sophisticated cars, you're local corner garage probably isn't going to be able to do much along the lines of repairs, you'll need to take it to a euro specialist, the dealer, or do it yourself. Most of us here on the forum do our own work, because its cheaper, and because we can.
To play it on the safe side, if you have any doubts that you can't afford to keep up maintenance, you're probably right. Some of us have had cars that require very little work, others, like myself, have had to replace quite a few components (my latest was replacing the entire rear end).
Read thru the FAQ at the top of the forum, there's a bunch of info for new buyers that will probably help you.

To sum it up: it's a very bad car for a first car.
It's extremely expensive to repair and just maintain. Insurance at your age would be very high. A lot of people end up selling their tt's after a year, because they don't realize how much they cost. I figure I put about $1200/year in my car maintance alone (tires, brakes, timeing belt, oil changes).
Try looking at MR2's, preludes, del sol, ect. They would be much better first cars.

Yeah maintenance on these things do add up! I bought a used 01 225q with 45K miles. Within a year I had to replace the front axle twice.I also paid to have the timing belt/waterpump, timing tensioner, valvecover gasket and basic tuneup and maintenance done just before it hit 60K. It was not cheap! You are talking to a tunejust short of afew thousand. All work was done at a certified VW/Audi shop (that's all they do). It's nicely modded now and runs GREAT after owning the car a year and a half. Now it just sits in my garage. It came out this morning for the first time in a couple weeks to get washed.
I will say this car has cost me the most out of any car I have owned. Even modding the thing is stupid expensive when compared to others.

I have to say that it is a hit or miss with the TT. Some years seem to break more than others but my 2000 QC has been great so far for the last 2 years. Repairs are costly but that is expected with any Euro/german car.
The best thing to do is start with a cheaper car that you can afford, mod and play around with and then after a few years move up in the chain. I started with a 94 4 door golf GL, and got used to driving standard, driving pèople around and fixing my own car. Then after 2 years, and alot of money spent on modding i bought my TT. I knew how to maintain the car properly and learnt the up keep of the car. You do as you wish, but the worst feeling is having bought a car that you cant afford to fix, forcing you to sell it.
