Default Instrument Cluster Value / 2001 TT

My cluster needs to be replaced. I have an extended warranty that expires next month. Since I didn't buy this warranty from my local dealer they want me to pay for the repairs and then get re-imbursed by the warranty company. I talked to the warranty company and they are ok with that.

I told the dealer that I wanted the defective cluster back since I'm paying about $900.00 for a new one.

I've heard these can be rebuilt for around $400.00 . The down side is that you're without a cluster and your car will it's being rebuilt. Having a spare on hand would eliminate the down time.

Can anyone use a defective one for a core to be rebuilt? And what's a fair price for it?

The only thing wrong is a few lines on the center screen is pixilated. All the gauges function properly. If it wasn't for my warranty expiring I would be getting it replaced at this time.
