No. I will stick with the paper filter for now. I have a K&N and never realized any performance improvement over the paper, and the risk to damaging the MAF isn't worth it to me.
Bro like 100 hp right there!
No gain's I've noticed to but I did notice the D/V was a little louder.

i woudlnt do that to my stock box.... you have any idea how much that retarded thing is worth ??? lol, just get an intake or a drop in filter...
Why do you think that's such a hack? I've seen worse with people drilling 1" holes all over the bottom. With the increased air flow needed to support 20+ psi on a chipped 225, you need to do something to increase the opening. At the same time, moding the airbox defeats all the "hot air" arguments since it is drawing in air from the same place as the stock intake snorkle. The reason I don't really like the cone/mushroom solution is because they are much louder. I'm trying to reach a balance between sound and performance.

You can get muffled cone intakes. Most of the VTDA intakes are pretty quiet with the cover on. the cover blocks almost all the noise. Most have reported huge increases in sound since removing it.

I've seen the 1 inch holes -- swiss cheese oem intake box. .. and the guy even charges to have that done .. CMON!!! but if you read his thread he switched over to the VTDA since it flows better than the cut up stock aribox.

to me any cutting of the eom stuff is a hack job. im not saying dont do it ... its your car... just not something i would do.

by cutting it up .. isnt your DV louder? i would imagine it is.

as for loudness if you want more power, you cant avoidhaving a louder motor, its not like its so loud you cant hear your passenger talk.

if this works for you great . liek is aid not something i would do. but then again i dont care how loud my car is.

The DV isn't normally louder--only when I suddenly go off throttle without shifting. I guess you missed the point about my mod being a little less costly than the VTDA.

im not saying go VTDA, i just suggested an alternative. but to be "cost" effective just drop in an open elemnt filter, bolted to the maf. but, it sounds like you are concerned with the noise level associated.

i do understand what you are saying, and what you have done is a solution that has been done b4, if it works for you then great, it has worked for others, but they eventually revertedto a different system when they modify further,

you wont find any real gains nor will you find comparable improvements over the stock unit.if you replace the paper filter with an aftermarket unit then you will pay almost the same as an open element filter and still not get the "gains" you would from the open element filter, maybe this is why people went a different route after cutting up the stock intake.

now theproblem you face is. when you want to revert back to stock, now you need an overpriced stock unit (only if you want to go back to stock)

i think its cool that you went ahead and tried to solve your problem by own way , nothing wrong with that.

but if you think that an intake system is too much $$ then maybe modding is maybe not for you... what will you think when you have to upgrade SW, Turbo, TIP, MBC, Boostguage, suspension.. thelist goes on.

I understand. But from my sig, you will see that I am not new to modding. My GTI and previous cars are not even in my sig because I ran out of space. It all started with being one of the first people to put a Neuspeed supercharger on a 2000 Jetta 2.0. I'm not offering a superior solution, only a better one than swiss cheesing my airbox. It does work better than the stock box in high load conditons--I'm basically tripling the opening for air to get into the box while keeping the benefits of a stock filter. But thanks for your comments.
