Kinda scared!!!
Okay so I just came home, after realizing I left without my wallet.
I pulled into my parking spot and took it out of 1st and pulled the e-brake like always...
EXCEPT this time the silver **** on the e-brake popped off, the e-brake dropped down and my car started rolling backwards!
Not to mention the heart stopping POP that it made!
Nothing broke and I just slide the silver button/**** back on and the e-brake seemed to be okay... I'm still nervous though!
Holy hell... anyway I need to know if there is a problem with my e-break cause I don't feel like looking outside and seeing that my TT backed into a tree!
Did I just pull it too hard?
What's the deal?
I'm shaken! Help!

dunno about the **** coming right off, but i've had my ebrake drop on me from the button sticking. For me, its due to the way I lift the ebrake. My finger is usually right up on the underside of that button.
really, you probably should leave it in gear, just in case. I say this, but I don't do it either, I think it deforms the rubber shift boot, so i leave it in neutral. I have found my car 20 feet farther down a driveway than I left it though....
I just make sure its engaged enough to hold the car (usually 4 clicks on level ground, 6 on an incline for my car) and make sure its not going to pop loose once i let go.
The reason for not cranking right up on the ebrake is the disk brake. Back in the day (or on lesser cars) with drum brakes, the braking force is much less, so you really need to put some tension on it when you pull it. With disk brakes, it holds much better, so really cranking on that handle is only going to stretch your ebrake cable.
