Default LED license plate bulbs?

I recently noticed my license plate lighting looked a little dim so I went to my auto parts store and bought some LED plug in lights to brighten it up. However once I got home I cracked open the lens covers to discover the TT has the old school cylinder shaped bulbs =(

Anyone out there converted their old wiring to support LEDs or had a better idea?

Default license plate LED's

I replaced the filament bulbs with blue LED's from superbrightleds and the license plate bulb diags kept failing when I started the car.

After quite a bit of research (including the state laws in AZ), I decided to add a single filament bulb holder directly above the license plate under the trunk lid overhang ($5 from O'Brien/Checker/whatever their called these days). I wired the bulb in parallel with the two existing holders which still have blue LED's.

This strategy accomplished two things:

1) It fooled the car diags into thinking that the license plate lamps weren't burned out without have to add those bulky resistors that don't do anything but generate heat; and,

2) I brought my car back into compliance with the state law which reads "..the color of the light illuminating the vehicle's license plate shall be white and make the license plate readable from a distance of 50 feet."
