I kinda figured that.
Why would he charge you tore-install a head that's gonna need to come off again to fix it?
Sorry if I sound critical, but I hate shops that make money off of dishonesty instead of work. There's probably more to it than what you posted. If so, fine. If not... you're getting ripped off.

I appreciate your concern. At the time they quoted me this, the damage inside was unknown. It would need to be replaced after any work is done. If I walked in today and dragged it home, I suppose I would save myself $550[:-].

I say, drop the engine and put in a crate motor.... then you get to keep the sexiest Audi on the road! I've heard of Audi 1.8t crate engines going for $2,500...just gotta find em'.

Update on this post...
After much deliberation, got insurance to pay for the repairs ($3100)...
Two weeks later, lady runsa red light and t-bonesit. My wife was driving it, she walked away with only a small cut on her finger. Long story short, it's totalled (clearly we are not supposed to own this car anymore [X(]).But, the thingheld up really well. Insurance is giving us a fair value plus picking up 75% of the previous repair costs. I have lots of pics, email or postif you want to see them. Here are a few:
