Default Need some advice buying an used Audi TT

Hello AudiForum people

I am considering buying an used Audi TT - the "first" model, but need some advice from you and not least what I have to be aware of.
I've been out and try a few audi tt's - the car is indeed very nice ;-)

1. I have heard I should go for models from year 2000 onwards - something with errors on the brakes before year 2000?
2. Advantages / disadvantages (excluding petrol usage)
3. Experience with a good and cheap insurance?
4. Can the blasted thieves let the car stand in peace? ;-)
5. Other things to keep in mind with this car?

Hoping for some advice :-)
Regards,
Per

1. In the US the tt was only made from year 2000 on. No real changes or more relilable years.
2. My MPG is around 25mpg, but you could easly see higher numbers if you drive more highway. The main disadvantage is the tt is very expensive to maintain and repair.
3. My insurance is actually pretty cheep, less then most sports cars.
4. Pretty much impossiable to steal the tt. It actually has a nice factoy alarm system with immoboilzer.
5. Maintance can be expensive. Make sure it's been done or adjust the cars price to account for the maintance required. See the faq for more info.

Hi Jakej,

Thanks for replying :-)

1. OK - I'm from Denmark, Europe - so maybe I will just go with cars from 2000 ;-)
2. OK with MPG - petrol is way much cheaper in the US:
US: 1 US gallon ~ USD 3,97
DK: 1 US gallon ~ USD 7,36
3. OK with insurance
4. Nice - it did not know that - I was thinking about adding a GPS alarm to it as well.
5. Ok - I will be aware of that.

The price of a used TT 1.8 coupé in Denmark, 100.000 km mileage, is around 250,000 DKK ~ around USD 43,000 - so you can probably imagine how ripped of I feel ;-)

If anybody/you have more good advice please feel free to post ;-)

Btw, is it me, or is the internet connection to europe just pain slow? I get several timeouts, non-responsive threads when I click around audiforums.com?

Regards,
Per

Since you are in Europe, you may want to ask on the UK forum:

Also, the 'net in general seems slow today... This site had been pretty speedy lately, but it (an several others I use) are very slow today.

Hi,

MCPaudiTT: I will check out the uk forum.
Ph3N0m: omg for that price I could buy 5 tt's in Denmark :-) - I might consider moving to the US, and buy the newer TT instead.
The scheme is like this:

When they started selling TT's in Denmark around 1998 - the car price was, around 35,000 USD, but because of state taxes, VAT and other funny stuff, the price will end up on 120,000 USD for a new Audi TT. Currency rate is 5,39 DKK = 1 USD.
We have a saying in DK - "buy one car, pay for three"
