It would be buying a used one out of the classifieds here or on vwvortex.com. Now what makes you think your turbo is bad because 9 out of 10 people saying this its NOT the turbo.

i will try to get a sound clip for you guys sometime soon, but it is making a shuttering sound if i get on i hard but only in gear, when i brought it to the performance shop they were no help. It may be the dv but im not too sure is there anyway to test it. It seems that the turbo which has 110k on it is rubbing on the bell hosing, thats what it sounds like. Its almost like an inconsistent belt squeaking sound. BTW timing belt and all of that was just done, it did this before and after the belt job.

thats kind of a big issue there- IMO it would be worth it to pay an audi dealer or VERY qualified indie shop to diagnose the exact problem and make sure a blown turbo is indeed the problem. better to pay a few hundred for proper diagnosis, and know what you are getting into, than to start buying and replacing stuff you are not sure you need. best of luck!!

Is it really that hard to take some hoses off and check shaft play if you really think its the turbo?

You can either rebuild it or just by a used turbo. Gpopshop should be able to build the ko4, i know they do ko3's. Since you have a 01, thatwould be a 20

You dont have to remove the turbo, just the intake side so you can wiggle the shaft.
