Default Newbie looking for info

Greetings!
So I've spent my last 10 years obsessing over my bimmers, I haven't invested any time looking at Audi. But now my wife is in the market for a TT. (I suppose I get to drive it too ) Hopefully I've found the right place.

I'd like to know what to look for as far as known issues, quirks, etc. Interior, Computer, Suspension, Any issues that come with age, etc. Is there anything unusual about the cost/frequency of service?

Any thread you can point me to that go over some of this stuff would be helpful too. Any other boards too.

What's the preferred trim among the enthusiasts? I've always been partial to normally aspirated engines, and haven't spent much time in 4 wheel drive cars either.

Thanks for the help!

there is a thread like this that pops up almost weekly. Just search "buying, looking, info" etc and you will find all the info you need

^^^ Exactly.

Coming from a BMW, you'll most likely prefer the VR6 engine. It has more hp stock, but isn't easy (cheap) to modify. Otherwise, cost of repairs and maintance is inline or maybe cheaper then bmw, due to some audi parts are the same as VW.

Well this is a real obvious one for members here, but a lot of people are still not aware.

-Have you ever noticed that most of the TT's you see for sale have around 70 thousand miles. This is because it is almost a given that the timing belt is going to break somewhere in that range of miles. If your going to get it fixed right, and your not a mechanic, its going to cost around $1000 dollars. Just giving you a heads up. Other than this issue, I love the car. There are other minor issues...I have heard a lot about vacuum leaks (cheap fix), window motor/regulator issues, handle breaking off glove box(haha). It all depends on how hard you drive and what year the car is. Overall, they are good cars.

No timing belt issue with the VR6 engine though.

The DSG in the 3.2 VR6 has been known for some issues though. That's what I was told by my transmission guy the last time I had my Avant in for the ATF fluid change.

I have an 00 TT 1.8 180hp quattro and its cost a fair bit in maintenance. It has 124000 miles on it and I have had to install a new steering rack and transmission. The front tie rods all 4 wheel bearings, rear shocks and rear struts have been replaced, numerous vacuum lines, the MAFF, and of course - the water pump . I also have an engine light that likes to stay on and a huge turbo lag between 2800-3100 rpm - another vacuum line im thinking .

The up side is that the car is AWSOME to drive. I actually use it as my winter car because it handles so good on icy roads. its sweet all year round.. yes its just sweet. My summer vehicles are a 05 ducati 999s and an 03 R6 track bike.
