Oil Usage
Hey guys-
I have a 2002 225Q.
I've had my car about 5 months now, and am wondering about typical oil consumption Do these cars typically use oil? Just about the time I needed to do my first oil change (second actually, I changed it the day I brought it home), the low oil light came on. I thought, no big deal andchanged the oil that day, and decided I'd keep an eye out for leaks. I've seen no evidence of a leak anywhere. Now, about 2500 miles later, I got the same light on the way into work. I checked the oil when I got to work, and sure enough its low.
I've not owned a turbo car before, and I've read that there are issue with what I think is called "blow-by." On Harleys I've owned, they route a tube back into the intake that routes the oil that blows by whatever it blows by so that it is burned off. Often folks re-route the tube to either drip out onto the ground (how Harleys mark their territory) or into a catch can of some sort. I've seen other folks tal;ing about catch cans on this forum and am wondering if that's the same thing. If so, or even if not, how much oil consumption is typical between 3000 mile oil changes?

Shouldnt be any. I hope use use either a 5w40 or mobil 1 0w40 full syn in you car. But there are a few things to set off a oil light, but if your actually losing that much you have something going on.
Also it is a catch can, handful of people, myself included have one. It is kind of a nessesity if you dont want oil going into the turbo's intake and pooling in your ic.

1 liter per 1000 miles? You serious? For what car, a 83 Ford Escort with bad rings in each cylinder? I do my oil changes (7k miles and @ 102k miles) and i only am missing about a 1/2 cup of oil, if that.
** I do end up taking about a teaspoon of oil out of my catch can about 5 or 6 weeks though.

Well, I got under the hood and crawled around underneath, nothing is wet with oil, so I'm definately "using," not losing the oil. I was about a quart low over 2500 miles since the last change. That's a bit much to my way of thinking. The catch can sounds relatively easy to do, so I'll start there to see if I'm losing a buch that way.
How do you tell if you need to replace pcv system? Is that fairly simple? What else might I look for as the problem?

The exhaust is gonna get a bit sooty, due to the rich nature of the car, but clean your exhaust tips up, and keep an eye on how quickly they get sooty. Also, if you can have someone take a look at the back of the car as you take off in the morning. You might be burning a bit, and it'll show more when you start up in the morning.
putting in an oil catch can is a good way to tell if the pcv system is bad....my blow-by mix in the can was filling fast and looked nasty...since i replaced the pcv its very minimal and looks much better. (not like yellow milk anymore) do the catch can! total cost about 20bucks with the fittings there is a pic in mine and cincys photo gallery
