Default Please help

So im going away to school friday so today i was inspecting my car to make sure everything was in order but when i was looking in my engine compartment i saw a hole about the size of a quarter and the plug for it was laying right next to it the hole is to the right of my exhaust manifold and down about8 inches forthe manifoldand it has a gear about 1/4 of an inch inside it. Does anyone know what this is? Could be a potential problem that the plug wasnt in it? Thanks
