lots of gas, plenty of ebrake, and a sharp turn.

You should come see what i can do in a FWD TT!!

Wow that video is awesome. I haven't got a chance to play with by brother's TT yet. Is it impossible to get an oversteer condition without the e-brake? ESP on or off?

I have a bit of drifting experience from my 240SX days. I actually consider myself a pioneer as we were doing this in the 90s. AWD drive cars are a bit difficult because the computers and differentials that control the torque splits are always shifting but it can be done, just watch 5th Gear when they drift an all wheeler. If you want to modify your quattro for drifting it essential that you buy a Haldex controller that allows you to lock in torque split so that you don't get any surprises and a huge anti-roll bar. It can be done though if you follow the following steps:

1. Unlike a RWD whereby the turn will be entered at about 45mph you will have to go about 60mph or faster.
2. Turn the wheel in the opposite direction of the turn taking the turn wider than a normal clean line would dictate. This is called the "Finnish Flick" and is a classic rally technique
3. RAPIDLY turn the wheel in the direction of the turn while flooring the gas and on the boil.
4. Continue flooring as this will send more torque to the rear.. Your car will jump sideways quickly but not that far due to the instant rush of torque to the rear wheels.
5. You will be able to hold it for only a few seconds before the haldex suystem stops sending to the rears. A this point you'll want to start using your fornt wheel to pull you through.
6. To correct the car, lift, point the cars nose in the direction you wish to go and then floor it.
7. Without a fixed torque distribution though it will be more of a rally style slide (This is really fun on dirt roads) but will lack the full tail out madness of a true drift.

Okay, sounds relatively difficult. Does that mean on the road course the TT has to be driven pretty much like a front driver? Trying to carry speed through the corners and throttle causing understeer?

Stock out of the box, the TT will have pretty severe understeer. With a upgraded rear sway bar you'll be mostly neutral. Taking it to the next step of adding coilovers, a slightly aggressive rear camber and corner balancing, you can get a car that will easily throttle steer, trail brake and rotate through corners. ;-) Once you get it set up, it's a real blast to drive on the track.

It's my brother's first track car and I think he wants to go coilovers then wheels and tires. I'll put in a good word for rear sway bar and after we get it on coilovers, I'll ask you for alignment specs. With above mods and with the stock 225hp and street tires, what class of cars is the TT generally competitive with? I know individual cars and tracks vary greatly, but I'm guessing Mini Cooper S', Mustangs, older RX-7s, RX-8s, maybe S2000s, and faster than Miatas. Is that fair, or am I way off? Thanks for your help.

I can pull 360s in my A4 in a wet parking lot. My buddy could ebrake drift all day in his eg hatch... he was pretty insane.

I never really liked the whole drifting scene - its just a bunch of showboating if you ask me.
