Default Questions!!! Car died on highway, melted fuse

Hi,

I'm a female non-mechanic that could use some help. I don't want to throw away more money In the past, car places have tried to charge me huge amounts for very simple things.

I was driving an older audi tt on the highway when all of a sudden the glowplug light came on. shortly after, all the gauges went to 0, all sorts of weird lights came on (airbags, etc), the radio shut off, and then the entire car shut off. i restarted the car and the same thing happened.

i was towed home. the car wouldn't start at all, and acted as tho the battery was dead too (couldnt roll windows, etc). I looked under the hood and the 150A fuse was melted and it had marked up the fuse box with the heat.

does this mean it was a blown fuse? bad alternator cable? bad alternator or battery?

Also, to change the 150A fuse, do I need to disconnect the battery? If so, can you please tell me what tools I need to do that? (Ive never done this haha) I was thinking of getting socket wrenches from amazon but i dont even kno what size/type.

thanks in advance for your help!
