We are purchasing a 2002 TT coupe today w/150,000 miles on it. Someone else was going to purchase it and replace the timing belt immediately but they backed out of the deal. Speaking with the salesperson he said when their mechanic looked he could confirm that the belt has been replaced at least once before.

The prior (single owner) had pretty good service records up until around 100k but don't really see anything after that.

So my question is - does the timing belt need to be replaced immediately ? Is there a way to easily determine the condition of the belt ?

I thought about calling the Audi dealer where all of the other work was done as indicated in the service manual but not sure they would even tell me when/if it was done (could've been done someplace else for that matter)...

The Audi dealer should be able to provide you with that information. If there are no records of it being done do not gamble , replace the belt , tensioner , rollers & water pump.

 

Agreed. It will surely cost you over $4000 if it breaks.

 

We have a 2000 A4 turbo and unfortunately the t belt broke. It cost us over $ 6000 (Canadian) to replace the cylinder head and parts. Not worth gambling with. We have over 200,000 kms on it.
