Default timing belt vs. timing chain

Why does Audi insist on using timing belts instead of timing chains? Wouldn't a timing chain be much more reliable?

Long, old debate... I think they do it to cut costs and bring you into the dealer every so often.

They use chains on the 3.2 and 2.0T. But chains still stretch like a belt does so it doesnt really matter.

Germans are picky little ******, they mostly put belts on them so they are quieter, audi got tired of paying for cylinder heads from broken timing belts so they switched to timing chains.
The 2.0T engine still uses a belt though, not a chain.

It says in my repair manual that the timing belt is recommended at 80k so i don't know, maybe i gotta take the cover off one or look it up somewhere. Lets see if we can find a link.
