I need some hepl on what is the normal temp for a 225 tt to run at when the theromstat is supost to open and so im trying to fix my temp gauge that climbs past the middle line when it get warm at a light. I want to see if it is the gauge going bad or is the theromstat is not opening when it should be or what. I cant take a reading with vagcom to see mine. Help me out guys and thankd all of you for the help so far.

If its climbing when you're not moving, but operating normally when you are, it sounds like your temp gauge is working correctly. Consider your coolant temp sensor (works 2 roles, temp sensor, and fan controller), or your fans as possibly malfunctioning.

The thermostat should start oppening at apporximately 189 degrees F and be fully open by approx. 216.

Yea it is fine when i drive and when i stop it clims i log my temps driving around and getting on it the the other day and it is form 90c to 98c that seems high to me but im not sure. The first thing they did when i said it was doing that is replace the black sensor with a green one.

also ive pondered the benefits of having a thermostat that opens sooner...lots of people say its better for higher HP cars because the coolant flows sooner....idk the engines were designed to operate a certain way(stock in mind) and guess thats why they have those temps for the thermostats...anyone have any experience with different thermostats

Two words.


Oil Cooler.


Thermostat just kinda hangs out once the car is warmed up. It never closes until the car cools, its not like it regulates anything. I don't see how it would make a difference with what Hp your making.

Umm, the stock ic(s) are heat soaked with just a chip. That is completly different than an oil cooler

So you're saying there are no benefits to cooler oil, and that in fact, cooling your oil with the stock, or even beefy diesel sandwich plate, which uses ~190°F coolant is better?
