Upgrade Ideas
As you may have read in my first thread, I recently purchased an 01 180hp Quattro (bone stock). I'm looking to make a few upgrades here and there and I'm relatively new to working on cars. I'm also an engineer and a fast learner so I'd like to be able to do some of these on my own. First of all this forum has been very useful. I have been reading through quite a bit of info here and need a few things cleared up.
It appears the necessary upgrades are: Chip, 3" downpipe, exhaust, intake, DV, and boost.
I've done some research and have my eye on the Borla cat-back DUAL exhaust. Since I have the 180, I'll need to buy the valence from the 225hp since I don't want to do any cutting. In order to see any real gains I suspect I need to upgrade my intake, so I plan to get a VDTA from modshack as well. If I get a new intake, will I need to get something like a Forge DV as well?
Is it silly for me to do all this without getting a 3" downpipe, or will I see significant gains nonetheless? If I do get the downpipe, should I get the ATP VES to reduce noise (is it really that loud)? Also, is the VES something I should be doing INSTEAD of the borla exhaust?
Regarding the Chip, most say that both GIAC and APR are reputable brands and it is the most bang for my buck. Is this a standalone mod or is it useless without new intake, etc?
As for boost, my gauge is in the mail. Is the modshack boost machine all I will need for this?
My last question... in what order should I get these done as I do not have the cash up front to do them all at once? If you can group them into 3 sets that would be nice so I can do them over the course of the next year (xmas, birthday, tax return
). Thanks in advance to any info, I'm still kind of new to this and Audis altogether.

I'm also an engineer Please dont be the typical engineer i see on the forums talking out of there butt
I suspect I need to upgrade my intake, so I plan to get a VDTA from modshack as well. If I get a new intake, will I need to get something like a Forge DV as well? Stick with the stock airbox. No reason to spend money on an intake that gains you nothing in the way of power. Forge or Apr, both are good dv's
Is it silly for me to do all this without getting a 3" downpipe, or will I see significant gains nonetheless? DP make bigger gains than catbacks. But you can do one without the other. You really should add the chip first.
If I do get the downpipe, should I get the ATP VES to reduce noise (is it really that loud)? Also, is the VES something I should be doing INSTEAD of the borla exhaust? VES's are never in stock and are VERY loud when open, ITS A DUMP STYLE EXHUAST
Regarding the Chip, most say that both GIAC and APR are reputable brands and it is the most bang for my buck. Is this a standalone mod or is it useless without new intake, etc? NO INTAKE [:@]
As for boost, my gauge is in the mail. Is the modshack boost machine all I will need for this? You can get a better/equal mbc that takes up far less space, less complicated to install/operate and cost FAR less
My last question... in what order should I get these done as I do not have the cash up front to do them all at once? Chip then exhaust

(If I were you) I would chip my car with a new DV first! That would give you a significent result.
And also I would throw in a 3" DP.
the Borla exhaust sounds good. low deep sound. would be next.
Then, I would purchase a intercooler and a MBC to increase my boost!
the intake would be my last mod if neccessary. you can always pick up a F&M from autozone to cure your temporary need for air flow

Thanks for the replies so far!
Cincy, I'm only a computer engineer and I'm far from a "know-it-all". I suppose I had it coming, posting something like this, but I've been reading all day. With all these ideas flying around in my head from various threads I just wanted to get some things straight and organize my thoughts, so please bear with me. I appreciate your help, and thanks for the link!

remember it's a 180 QUATTRO. A downpipe isn't as easy to come by as with the fwd 180ttand you will most likely have to have one custome fabricated (unless 42DD picks up the pace with their 180TTQ DP still in the works). as for the borla catback dual exhausts... what a shame. dual
