Default What is an ECU? I need help choosing what to get.

I am trying to up the HP on my 2001 TT 225/coupe 6Speed. I'm looking to chip or upgrade the ECU (Is there a difference?), Put a newForge 007P Diverter Valve, 3" Borla Catback Exhaust, and BMC TT Carbon Dynamic Airbox.
Unfortunately, I know much more about car audio than I do performance so I'll have most of these done professionally.

- I have no clue about ECU chipping and "Programs" or how many programs I want and/or need. What do these do? How many do I need? and what is a good ECU Chip to get? I've been looking at the APR 1.0 BAR ECU Upgrade. Any help on this subject would be of great assistance to me. Is there anything else under like $500 worth getting along with these items to help get a little more zip in this sucker... ie: silicon hoses, pulleys, coils, etc?

- Is the TTCDA worth putting on or would I be better off with just a cold air intake type system?

I'm having a hell of a time finding TT parts. Probably because I look for only TT specific parts because I don't know the VW compatibility. -shrugs-
Please help. lol

Oh and also... there this OEM N75 H "Race" Valve thing. It appears to be a wastegate upgrade but it says "for experienced tuners only". Is this worth getting and is it something that will screw up my car easily?(hence the warning)

Default RE: What is an ECU? I need help choosing what to get.

Ok im gona help you out since it will save you alot of time in the search area. The ECU is your computer that controls your engine, the chip reflash it basically taking your car into a shop and having the program redone, they advance the timing (or retard it) add more boost and more fuel. There are plenty of companys to chose from, GIAC, APR, REVO, umm check out neuspeed I know they have a chip. Now when you chip a TT it is in your best interest to get a new Divertion Valve, these are different in that they route the compressed air back into the intake instead of the atomosphere like a Blow off valve, there are many companys that offer DV's, Forge, Hyperboost, I think a few others but those are the main ones, If you keep your stock DV there is a good chance the valve inside it will fail and leak boost and you will not reach the turbos full potential. I can tell you about my GIAC I took it into the dealer in OKC he had it for about an hour and programed it with 3 different programs that I can switch from. I have the stock program for when I take it to the dealer, (so they cant tell me I did anything), I have a 91oct+ with higher boost (16ish)(stock 225 10-12) and I have a 100oct+ for when I go to the track. All in total the three programs cost me 1000, yes it is worth it, I know the 91+ program took me from 225 to 265 just on the chip itself. Add a good intake and most will agree that if you do a google search for MODSHACK check it out, steve (the guy that handmakes the intake) really knows what he is talking about when it comes to these TT's. If you get a chip and intake you should get a new intake hose as the OEM one is likely to collapse under higher boost (the rubber collapses starving the turbo of precious air) www.ttstuff.com offers a good samco intake hose. There are many more options for the TT, if you have anymore questions pm me. Good luck!
