Hi. this is my first post on this site!

just been offered (free!) a 2001 A4 1.8T Estate, which the guy claims has blown its turbo. Aparantly its oil light came on, and he topped it up and it runs ok,, but blows smoke and does about 20 miles to the sump?

there is no mayo in the rocker box sumo or water tank. Is this a common problem? what kind of a job is it to fix? The cars done about 100k miles.

It somewhat sounds like a blown turbo, but the key thing to listen for is a dentist drill sound that changes frequencies when you rev it. If he will let you, get to the turbo inlet (15 minutes, a few screwdrivers and wire cutters) and check the shaft for play

You'll have to replace the turbo. Keep in mind that the turbo didn't just decide to quit. Something else is probably wrong in the oil system.

There are rebuild kits but if the turbo is that far gone, you need a new one.

Turns out that the only problem was the oil ffed pipe banjo had come loose and was letting the oil out! The Rubber pipe to the turbo was also split. So it looks like new pipe, and a good service should see it up and running ok! Overall, hopefully not a bad swap for a bottle of whiskey!
