Default is the 1.8T interchangable throughout the years?

I am completely new to the forums and a search really didn't turn up anything useful(maybe I'm wording it wrong).
What I have is a 01 A4 1.8 w/ tiptronic. The engine is shot but I have not even picked up the car so I have no idea what is wrong. What I would like to know is if other 1.8s' will physically work. Even if modifications are needed it might be cost effective for me to interchange parts from a 01 engine to a cheaper 99 engine than to buy the "direct fit" 01 engine.
Any guidence is greatly appreciated

The longitude cranks have to match the tranny (auto or manual). Also the AEB and ATW motors are 058 blocks and they dont fit perfectly like a 06A block in all 01+ cars.

depends on the parts. the 01 is the AWM motor so you have a slightly different turbo with a smaller head and intake manifold. so if you change those parts with a older 1.8T like the AEB, then make sure that you put both the bigger ports in the head and intake manifold on, otherwise your mis-matching.

its hard to answer this question without knowing what your problem is though, you probably don't have to do any of this stuff unless your valves or rods and stuff are bent.

I don't even have the car to my shop yet. What I was told is that the engine suffered from oil sludge and that it is knocking real bad. My guess would be that a rebuild will be in order but I want to start my research now just incase it's a broken rod or the damage is to expensive to repair. I have noticed the rod bearings are different so I know the internals are not the same but the motor mounts are.

Like i said, a AWM and AWB will replace what you have no problem. A ATC, AWD, AWP, AMU, and BEA will also work, but you need a longitude oil pan and pick up.

u sure an AWM will work? i thought you could only replace a ATW with a ATW (remember NuYorka). The AWM has a different bottom end, no VVT, external waterpump, and narrowband.

He has a AWM block already. THe ATW is a 058 and in the 2000's only. He can also use a AWBengine from a 02+

Default SOS!!! 2003 Audi A4 1.8T GGT Transmission issue

I own a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T with GGT Transmission code. Wondering if I can interchange it with 2005 Audi a4 1.8T HCP transmission code. Seems like it's the exact size. I have the car at the shop with the hcp tranny wonder if i should take the risk to have them put it in. Please let me know
Thanks
