Default 1996 A4 has manual transmission trouble

I know my throw out bearing was going out but now the 1st & 2nd gear synchro is now failing. Car has 220K original miles and this is the original 5 speed and clutch.

Question is can I put a newer used 5 speed transmission in the car to get a few more miles out of it. Plan is to put a new clutch pack, slave cylinder and used 5 speed in the car.

Thanks for the input.

Update: Looks like a new used transmission with a clutch kit and slave cylinder. Should be good for another 100,000K miles. Will follow up on transmission transplant.

Update 02/02/2016: Results of the no go manual transmission. The mechanic said the gears were flat due to the clutch not fully disengaging. Ended up installing a used manual transmission along with clutch kit and slave cylinder. Had a want to be mechanic do the work. He also located the used transmission.
Got the car back and it runs out nice with new & used parts. Should be good for another 200K miles.
I will share cost paid to do this work with you:
~ install clutch kit and slave cylinder $800
~ used transmission with 105K miles on it $650
~ Additional labor for work done on slave cylinder hydraulics $100
Grand total = $1,550
Reason for transmission going out was because of a new master cylinder and break boaster that was installed in this car a year ago. The hydraulic line from the master cylinder to the clutch slave cylinder was not done correctly. The same master cylinder is used for the automatic and manual trans. On the manual trans. a plug needs to be remove prior to connecting the hydraulic line to the clutch slave cylinder. This step was missed so no fluid was being feed to the clutch slave cylinder. The system only had fluid that was left when the old master cylinder was on the car. Over time it failed to fully disengage the clutch and I was told this is the cause for trans failing and gears flatting.
Any comments regarding cost here?
Thanks

Bump for any comments on work done to get the A4 back on the road. I like the 5 speed in this car. Make driving fun.

Regarding cost? I can tell you it was slightly less for me just to have a new clutch kit installed. After that, I can't really provide much feedback.
