If not properly cared for, both the 2.8 and 1.8 have sludge history. Before you buy it, start it up and listen to it run. Engines with bad sludge will have more noticeable lifter noise. Also have a look at the underside of the oil cap. If the motor's got a sludge problem, there will be gunk stuck to the bottom of the cap. Also check the oil with the dip stick. SOME sludge doesn't necessarily mean the motor is junk, just means you'll have to be extra nice to it. If it sounds like a diesel and the oil looks like chocoloate pudding, walk away.
