Shouldn't be the ignition switch since you said you can hear the pump run - are you sure it's the fuel pump though? In my 99, even with an ear to the access cover, the pump was barely audible (this was a new one that works). Maybe you're hearing something else. Could be the fuel pressure regulator - you can check this by pinching/clamping the vacuum line that runs from the FPR. If the car starts then, your FPR is bad.

Hi there I am having the same issue is sounds like I was wondering if you ever solved the problem with your car.

I just picked up a 98 Audi a4 quattro and replaced thebroken timing belt. Its in operfect time and just cranks and never fires. Any ideas?

No compression - when the belt broke it smashed the valves. Find an engine or start ordering parts to rebuild that one (valves, timing system kit, full top end gasket kit, possibly pistons and rings, etc)...

Is it difficult to rebuild both heads. New timing system?

Get ahold of a Bentley manual (it can be downloaded on this site, although I forget exactly where the link is), and read it through to see. Difficulty depends on your mechanical aptitude. Timing system is timing belt, hydraulic tensioner, tensioner and idler rollers, serpentine belt, water pump, thermostat - they all get changed at the timing service interval.

I have all that new already. Why a Bently manual? Its an Audi.

I know that. Why get a manual for a Bently when its an Audi I have? The heads the same?
