Question 2.8L oil capacity

I'm just wondering if anyone has this problem. or if i'm the only one, then what might be wrong with my car. I was looking up specs of my car when i say that the oil capacity is 5.3 quarts, but everytime i change the oil i use almost 7 quarts, and i'm not overfilling it, it takes almost 7 quarts to reach the oil fill line on the oil dip stick. my car is a 1998 A4 2.8L quattro and when i change the oil i use synthetic 10w40, and i use the mobil1 filter, if that helps in any explanation.

How freakin' big is your oil filter? When I had a 30v, I used 5-5.3 quarts and ALWAYS hit the fill line with that.

always right around 5.5 qts here for our 98 2.8 (just under 5.5 if you want to get technical) but NEVER EVER 6+ qts so I'm not sure what is going on with your car!

5 quarts, right between low and high... perfect. Are you sure you have quart containers?

its possible that the previous owner had an aftermarket oil cooler installed for one reason or another.

Just throwing it out there..

Are you sure you are getting an accurate reading on the dipstick? I recently realized that the orange female piece wasnt clicked in all the way so i was constantly getting a read on the stick that said i didnt have enough oil. Then i messed with it, it clicked in, and was a good inch over the max oil level.
