I got everything off in about an hour or so. the front end isn't really hard to take off, and once that is off, it is super easy to do. I have done much more difficult jobs. When I found out what I would have to do to mine I thought it would be a nightmare but everything went really smooth.

 

I've done the timing belt. Actually done a head gasket, rebuilt head and replaced front crankshaft cover...

Anyway - what is crazy is that over 1/2 the video (about 3 minutes) is getting access to the front of the engine and then putting everything back on.

So, if the engineers would have just given us about 3 more inches of front clearance - it would take about half the time...

 

I'm in the process of doing the head myself. Bought a really nice almost pristine 99 quattro 1.8t for $250. the timing belt had sheared the teeth. After taking it apart I noticed the water pump was jacked up pretty bad so I'm thinking the antifreeze may have caused the belt to skip shredding off the teeth. Got an ultimate timing kit from ECS, full gasket set, turbo gasket, head bolts and all new valves. total invested so far is about $800, the labor for the machine shop doing the head is going to be about $500 which I thought was really hugh but aparantly that is the norm for these heads. Never the less, for what I paid for the car even replacing the entire engine would still have made it a steal.

 

i did the timing belt job in my garage, wasn't so bad, just used the diy from aw...only problem is they do it on a 99 i think and the thermostat is different....... i can put up some of my pictures if needed

I just did mine. not a bad job. I would go to ECS tuning and get the ultimate timing kit. it includes timing belt, all 3 drive belts, tensioner, tensioner pulley, guide pulley, thermostat, and Water pump for $271 I believe thats what I paid.

In the first video H2o pump was left I did the job on my 1.8 l engine in 2 days , I took my sweet time .
