6 months and 10k miles
I've had my Avant for 10k miles now and it only took 6 months to get here. (3k last month ack!) It was a bumpy ride at first, the car was used to soaking it's previous owners at the dealer / mechanics shop. It took us a while to work out an understanding that I was infact going to do all of my own work. And there wasn't any point in breaking down any more becuase "I'm just going to fixyou anyway."
By bumpy ride I mean I had to do the following in the first 3 months:
Buy Vag-com & manual
Replace basically new tire due to flat (ok not cars fault but still)
Replace dumbass K&N airfilter
Replace MAF
Clean cruise control stalk, no fix
Inspect cruise control module, no fix
Replace battery
Replace tie-rod end
Replace CV Boot
Lost a gas cap
Replace fuse for fog lamps
Alignment
Replace front brake flex hoses
Repair demon pocessed sunroof controller
Repair ABS module controller
Scrubbed the hell out of the interior to get dog smell out (it worked!)
Repair cracked oil pan (again can't really blame the car except that it's low)
And changed the oil 3 times.
About $1100 in parts + legit Vag-com and manual
But since we got through all of that, it's been great. (knocks on wood trim)
I got the roof rack on and can now put 4 bikes on the roof if needed. When I get the cruise control finally fixed and an MP3 player hook up installed I'll be set! Ok... and replace vaccum lines and clean up idle controller. Oh and install a sub... I guess it never ends.
It's a great car and I'm planning to put another 20-40k miles on it before upgrading to a newer avant. (...TDI??) This forum is great and it's really fun to have a car that has an 'enthusiast' following since it makes all the repairs so easy to DIY. Anyway no real point to this post except, after the 'initiation period' -- I really like my Audi!

Nice TR6.
Whenever you purchace a used car, you end up buying all the things that the previous owner didn't take care of.
Once you have the major issues taken care of, checking with the vagcom every 5K miles and you should be fine. I'm now at 200K miles with minimal problems.
