so i bought a 97 a4 2.8 and smashed the front passenger side good enough to consider getting rid of the car. I'd rather not since the main components of the drive train are in great condition as well as just about everything in the interior is mint. I have the opportunity to get basically a 96 a4 2.8 shell for extremely cheap so my question is, does the drive train translate directly to a drop in and bolt on job or are there obstacles to surmount in order to get the job done?

Verify that the engine codes are the same (likely an AAH engine), and if so it should be pretty much a straight swap.
