'96 2.8L 5spd shudders, stalls in neutral, previous codes P1101, P1106 and P1250
I've referred to at least 20 threads on this site trying to figure out what's up with this car. It ran perfectly a month ago, and I really hope I haven't killed it! Here's the crack:
Valvoline (Long Beach, CA) did the following in August 2023:
New air filter, full synthetic oil and oil filter change, power steering and radiator fluids changed.
Two days later, the car would crank but not start the first time. Eventually, it started shuddering after cranking (revs around 200-400rpm), then would eventually come up to 1200rpm, before shuddering rpm down to 300-500, a solid CEL would appear, then it'd stall. I always started the car in neutral, and when I'd tap the accelerator it would stall immediately.
CEL codes were P1101, P1106, and P1250. The tank is 3/4 full and the fuel pump primes when I turn the key to "on" -- sidenote, the fuel gauge reads empty. (This may be an obvious tell, but I've been told it could be the dash unit itself.)
A few threads (and helpful Redditors) recommended changing the MAF. So I did and grabbed a new ignition control module just in case. Replaced both. I also attempted to change the spark plugs but couldn't pull the coil off of cyl 5 and 6 (and I think I had the wrong ones cos it misfired haha). The CEL doesn't come on anymore, but the engine still stalls within 10 seconds of running. I haven't replaced the fuel pump (there's so much fuel in the tank that I'm afraid to pull anything rn), but research suggests I could look at fuel injectors, too. The lines look pretty good (I followed them from the rail to the pump).
The car had been sitting for about 6 years before I bought it from the retired Audi/Porsche tech who got it into running condition. I've read that it could be the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors, fuel fuse or relay (both OK), O2 sensors, MAF, air filter, air intake, throttle body... I'm at a loss and sorely need your guidance.
Bonus: Sometimes smells like fuel, and sometimes smells like something is burning (not a clutch smell, though). The engine howls upon acceleration (could just be combustion), and the oil temp gauge will sometimes spike to 350 after stalling once.
